Launched in 2001, the .NAME TLD is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level names remained active.

There are no special restrictions on who can reserve a .NAME domain, but in order to preserve the concept behind its creation alive, the dot NAME Registry may check who the owner is and if there is no link between the owner and the actual domain, the registration may be challenged.
